View Full Version : Announcing Logan, UT Mountain Flying Camp Aug 2015!
February 2nd 15, 05:28 AM
We can't help it - we are doing a SECOND event in Utah in August 2015! Due to the overwhelming demand of pilots wanting to fly Utah, we are creating a special mountain flying camp in Logan, UT (160 miles north of Nephi) that will be fun, teach how to safely fly big mountains, and is perfect for pilots who have already flown some cross country and now want to try mountain soaring. If you have ever wanted to learn how to fly gliders in the mountains you now don't have to go all the way down to New Zealand - Logan and this event is for you.
We are limiting spots to only 35 gliders and expect this event to sell out quickly. We only have about a dozen spots left so act quickly and register! This is a highly organized event with daily pilots' meetings, retrieve office, launch crew, etc. and we will also have daily morning group classes with topics ranging from first time flying mountains, to successful landouts, to more advanced topics like how to fly mountains faster. We've learned a lot over the last few years doing the Nephi events and promise for a great time worth your effort of attending! :)
The camp will begin with an extensive mandatory classroom session where we you can learn the essentials like how to ridge soar, mountain thermal flying, transition multiple ridge lines from the Logan Valley Range to the Salt River Range to the Wind River Range and back, change flying tactics from the mountains to high desert flying, picking good outlanding fields, and much more. We will make sure you have the necessary tools to fly mountains before your first launch.
Evenings will consist of group dinners, soaring movies, and nightly group analysis sessions going over the day's flights. This would be the perfect first soaring event to attend if you have never been to one before. It will be low key but high fun! Local mentors will be available for pilots new to mountain flying both on the ground and in the air. Follow the leader flights will be possible.
How is this different than the Nephi OLC/XC event? At Nephi, we are focused on practicing flying racing tasks and flying personal best long distances and record flights. For example, we have awards for 750km and 1000km flights. At Logan, while long flights will be very possible, we will focus more on enjoying the beauty and challenge of mountain flying. Most flights will take place within 100 miles of Logan but what you will see will blow your mind! Check out the mountains by Afton, WY! Flying them (the Salt River Range) is one of the most incredible visual experiences of my life! Here is a video to prove it:

Logan is an amazing airport and city with lots of restaurants and things for the spouses to do. PowerFlarm is mandatory for this event. No exceptions. Contact Craggy Aero for special Logan Camp discounts on PowerFlarms. Check out Logan on a map. On good days we can make it to the Grand Tetons and back and we hope to do it during the camp.

Bruno,
Thank you for breathing new energy and initiative into the sport. While I am not planning on attending this event, I've been watching eagerly as you've managed to motivate dozens of folks to come out to these sorts of OLC meets. You're a visionary in our sport, keep up the good work and I hope the event/weather work out well!
Best Regards,
Daniel Sazhin

Having flown at Logan, Nephi, and Parowan, I can say that this should be
a terrific event! See you there.

Should be fun. I've enjoyed both of my flights on the Logan ridge. Hopefully someone at the camp can up Adam and my Idaho state records!

Kudos to you Bruno and the entire Utah Team for your efforts to unlock the soaring potential of Utah to U.S. pilots and the pilots of the world. I can't make it but I will concur that Logan offers some great soaring and some of the most analagous conditions to the true mountain soaring found in New Zealand or the Alps.

Thanks everyone for the warm words of encouragement and support. In the end, what we are trying to do is create super fun soaring events that we would want to attend ourselves. It is fun to see the final empty spots filling up. 2015 will be a crazy fun year in Utah! I hope those of you interested can join us. :)
